Cross - Kent Letters, 1850-1862.

This collection is comprised of letters written before and during the Civil War from Edward Cross to his lifelong friend Col. Henry O. Kent. Many of the letters are written from Cincinnati while Cross was working as a newspaperman. Other locations from which Cross wrote Kent include Philadelphia, St. Louis, Mobile, AL., Charlestown, S.C., and Raleigh, N.C.

Henry O. Kent, a native of Lancaster, NH, graduated from Norwich University in 1854. He was a member of the University Regulators and Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and was an organizer of the Alumni Association in 1860. Kent acted as a trustee of Norwich University from 1854 to 1909. He served in the Civil War and was active in local, state (New Hampshire) and national politics. He married Bernice Adaline Rowell in 1859 and the couple had two children. Edward Cross was educated at Lancaster schools and began his career as a newspaper printer for the Coos County Democrat. Cross worked at various newspapers across the country in the 1850s. In 1860/61 Cross served as a battalion commander in the Mexican Liberal army. Cross returned to New Hampshire in the fall of 1861 to accept a colonel's commission from Governor Nathaniel Berry and became commander of the 5th New Hampshire volunteers.Colonel Cross was wounded at Fair Oaks (June 186...
